InfraBased India

About this project

Why are you participating for Based India?

India's vibrant digital community inspires us. We recently hosted an event in Delhi specifically for this hackathon, bringing together 87 passionate builders to co-create on Base. This experience reinforced our belief in India's collaborative spirit and readiness for blockchain innovation.

We're here because:

  1. We believe in empowering India's 750 million internet users to be true stakeholders in their digital experiences.

  2. Our platform naturally aligns with India's community-driven culture, enabling users to have a real stake in the online spaces they value.

  3. By building on Base, we aim to make blockchain technology accessible and beneficial for everyday Indian users.

Our goal is to challenge the status quo of corporate networks with their high take rates and limited user ownership. We envision a digital economy where Indian users aren't just content creators, but true owners of their online communities. By leveraging blockchain technology, we're creating a system where engagement directly translates into ownership and value, free from the extractive models of traditional platforms.

What challenges are you focusing on?

1. Centralized Control and Manipulation

  • Platforms can arbitrarily manipulate content visibility and community access
    • Example: Reddit temporarily shut down r/WallStreetBets during the GameStop stock surge
    • This action favored large hedge funds over individual investors
    • Demonstrated how centralized platforms can interfere with community-driven movements
  • Social networks can change algorithms or ban/shadow ban accounts at will
    • Directly impacts creator earnings and community reach
    • Users have no recourse against sudden changes or arbitrary decisions

2. Unfair Value Distribution and Monetization

  • Most social networks (e.g., Facebook, Reddit) have a take rate of over 95%
    • Platforms capture and keep almost all the network value for themselves
    • Creators receive only a tiny fraction of the value they generate
  • Creators struggle to monetize their content effectively
    • Forced to rely on inconsistent ad revenue or sponsorships
    • Platform algorithms can significantly impact earning potential
    • No direct correlation between community value and creator earnings

3. Lack of True Ownership and Trust

  • Users have no ownership of their accounts, content, or digital identities
    • Example: When Twitter became X, it took the @x handle from a user who had been using it for 12 years
    • Platforms can unilaterally change usernames, remove content, or terminate accounts
  • No guarantee of long-term access to one's digital presence
    • Years of content creation and community building can be lost instantly
    • Users' digital legacies are at the mercy of corporate decisions
  • Lack of transparency in content moderation and account management
    • Unclear policies and inconsistent enforcement erode user trust
    • No true appeals process for most platform decisions

How does your submission address this challenge?

1. Decentralized Control and Community Empowerment

Dapps leverages Base's blockchain infrastructure to create a fully decentralized platform:

  • No Arbitrary Shutdowns: Communities on Dapps cannot be unilaterally shut down or censored.
    • Example: A situation like the r/WallStreetBets shutdown would be impossible on Dapps.
  • Transparent Governance: All platform decisions are made through smart contracts and community consensus.
  • Algorithm Transparency: Changes to content distribution algorithms are implemented through open-source smart contracts.

Potential Impact: Dapps could foster truly free and open online communities, immune to corporate or external pressures.

2. Fair Value Distribution and Creator Empowerment

Dapps introduces a revolutionary model for value distribution:

  • Minimal Platform Fees: Dapps takes only a fraction of a percent in fees, compared to 95%+ on traditional platforms.
  • Community Shares: Users can buy shares in communities they value, directly supporting creators.
  • Creator Earnings: Creators earn 5% of the value each time a share in their community is traded.

Potential Impact: This model could transform the creator economy, providing sustainable income streams that grow with community engagement.

3. True Digital Ownership and Trust

Dapps ensures users have full ownership and control over their digital assets:

  • Immutable Ownership: Usernames, content, and community shares are owned via smart contracts on Base.
    • Example: A situation like losing the @x handle would be impossible on Dapps.
  • Portable Digital Identity: Users can carry their reputation and content across different Dapps communities.
  • Transparent Moderation: Content moderation is governed by community-set rules enforced through smart contracts.

Potential Impact: Dapps could set a new standard for digital rights and ownership in the social media space.

Challenges we ran into

1. User Onboarding Complexity

Challenge: Introducing Web3 concepts like wallets and gas fees to new users initially proved overwhelming.

Solution:

  • Developed a streamlined onboarding process featuring:
    • Embedded wallets
    • Gasless transactions
  • Created interactive tutorials to guide users through their first community share purchase

Outcome:

  • Significantly reduced the learning curve
  • Made the platform more accessible to crypto novices

2. User Experience vs. Decentralization

Challenge: Balancing a seamless user experience with true decentralization principles presented a significant challenge.

Solution: Adopted a progressive decentralization approach:

  • Implemented core functions like share issuance and trading fully on-chain
  • Maintained some off-chain components to ensure a smooth user experience
  • Established a clear roadmap to gradually increase decentralization over time

Outcome:

  • Allows effective onboarding of users
  • Maintains alignment with Web3 principles
  • Provides a path for increasing decentralization as the platform mature

Additional Features

During the Buildathon, we introduced two significant features to enhance the Dapps ecosystem:

1. ActivityPub Integration

  • Implemented ActivityPub support, making Dapps communities interoperable with the fediverse
  • Allows users to interact seamlessly with platforms like Mastodon
  • Community posts can now reach a wider audience across the decentralized social web
  • Maintains the unique tokenized structure of Dapps communities

Impact:

  • Bridges the gap between traditional social networks and our Web3 platform
  • Significantly expands our potential user base

2. Community-Specific Games

Developed a framework for creating and deploying community-specific games within Dapps:

  • Games are designed to increase engagement and provide additional value to community shares
  • Example: Prediction market game
    • Community members can use their shares to bet on future events related to the community's focus
    • Game outcomes can influence share values

Benefits:

  • Gamifies the community experience
  • Encourages more active involvement
  • Potentially attracts game enthusiasts to join various communities

Impact:

  • Adds an exciting dynamic to community participation and investment
  • Enhances the overall value proposition of Dapps communities
  • We now have over 75,000+ users on the waitlist
